I don’t know about you but sometimes I need a reminder of what’s truly important and the real priority in life. One of those key priorities for followers of Jesus is the Great Commission. The most famous passage containing the Great Commission is Matthew 28:18-20 where Jesus says: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Yet, a version of this is found in the other gospel accounts as well.
In Mark 15:16, Jesus says, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” That simple statement is our charge as followers of Jesus. We are to go to all the world. In Matthew it was “all nations.” Here it is “all the world.” That sounds about the same to me. Our job as followers of Jesus is to think not only about ourselves, our communities, and our nation but to think about all nations and all the world. However, our thoughts about the world aren’t political, economic, etc. Our focus in going to all the world is to take the gospel to all creation. We are to take the good news of Jesus to the ends of the earth. This is our goal. This is our task. This is our commission.
I know most of you reading this today already knew those things. Yet, it never hurts to have a friendly reminder. We’re here and called by Jesus to bring glory to God through taking the gospel to all the world. Keep that on the front of your mind and go!
