Vacation Bible School is always a critical time in the life of a church. In fact, it’s usually the most evangelistic event in a church any given year. It’s no different for us here at FBC Byram. This week we have the privilege of sharing the gospel with children and pointing them toward Christ every day. We’re thankful!

Did you know that at least two-thirds of people who become believers in Jesus do so before they turn eighteen years old? Did you kno

Preach the Gospel - Mark 16:15

I don’t know about you but sometimes I need a reminder of what’s truly important and the real priority in life. One of those key priorities for followers of Jesus is the Great Commission. The most famous passage containing the Great Commission is Matthew 28:18-20 where Jesus says: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spi

True Freedom - Galatians 5:1-26

Freedom is a truly American ideal. Our nation was founded on the idea of freedom and independence. We value freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and so much more. These are critical to our ordered liberty as Americans. However, there is freedom that surpasses our American freedoms. While our American freedoms are incredibly important today, our freedom in Christ is eternally important always. What are our freedoms in Christ? Galatians 5:

Father's Day 2022

What is a father’s spiritual responsibility to his children? Well, that’s a big question, but I think we can look at two passages that at least give us a beginning glimpse at a father’s role. First, Joshua 24:15 says, “…as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” In this passage, Joshua was committing to leading his family in obedience to the Lord even if no one else did. It seems at least one responsibility of a father to his kids is simply to commit

Three Times a Failure - Mark 14:66-72

Well, there he was…failing again. Poor Peter kept letting Jesus down at every turn. All throughout the New Testament we see Peter speaking when he shouldn’t and staying silent when something needs to be said. He’s a failure. You and I are too. If you ever feel like you let Jesus down, you’re not alone. You’re in great company with every believer who has ever walked this earth.

Peter was arguably Jesus’s closest disciple. He spent more time with Him t

Pride, Arrogance, or Jesus? - Mark 14:27-31

by: Brandon Powell

I was watching Captain America: The First Avenger last week and was struck by this line: “Arrogance is not a uniquely American trait, but you do it better than most.” This was a line from the bad guy to Captain America. Now, I know you’re not supposed to side with the bad guy in these things, but he may be onto something. The truth is that arrogance and pride is not an American trait, it’s a human trait. We are a prideful bunch of folks. Even Peter struggled wi

Be On Guard!

There are so many reasons to long for the return of Jesus. Most people have some level of personal pain or grief they’re longing to see healed. Society regularly faces tragedy after tragedy in the public square. Families regularly face brokenness and despair. Even this very week, we’ve seen another mass shooting at an elementary school in our nation. It’s natural to ask how long the Lord will allow this type of wickedness to prevail. It’s natural to want to kno

A Poor Widow

“Others gave what they could spare. The poor widow spared nothing.”[1] That’s a powerful image in my mind. In Mark 12:41-44, Jesus observed a poor widow giving a very small amount of money into the temple treasury. As he was watching people give their contributions to the temple treasury for various offerings, many people were giving large amounts of money. Yet, this poor woman only gave a very small amount. In fact, the amount of money she gave may have been s

Taxation and Representation - Mark 12:13-17

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “No taxation without representation,” but I wonder if you’ve heard Jesus’s story about taxation and representation. In Mark 12:13-17, some religious experts tried to get Jesus into trouble with either the government or the Jewish people. They didn’t really care which one. So, they asked him a question about whether a Jewish person should pay taxes to the Roman government. His answer surprised them and is instructive for us.

Godly Relationships

We need godly influences in our lives. Around Mother’s Day, many of us begin to think of the godly mother’s the Lord gave us. Some of us don’t have that privilege and blessing. Yet, it’s still important to remember the value of godly influences in our lives whether they be family influences or just good friends.

Personal Faith

In 2 Timothy 1:3-5, Paul mentions at least three personal relationships which influence our spiritual life. First, we must hav

Tenant Problems - Mark 12:1-12

Everyone loves a good story. This is why movies and books are so popular. Everyone loves a good story. We particularly love relatable stories. We like stories where we feel like we are the hero or someone like us is the hero. We hardly ever envision ourselves as the “bad guy” in movies and stories. When we do, we don’t like it. Well, in Mark 12:1-12, Jesus tells a great story with only one problem. The audience was full of the “bad guys”, and they knew it.

Why is Easter Important?

by: Brandon Powell

“…If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied” (1 Cor. 15:17-18).

Why do we celebrate Easter? Why is Christ’s resurrection so important? Paul made this point profoundly clear in 1 Corinthians 15. Jesus’ resurrection is important because without it we are still in our sins.

Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday is always a big day in the life of the church. It’s the day we remember the beginning of Jesus’ final week before his crucifixion and resurrection. Palm Sunday is the day we remember people celebrating Jesus’ triumphal entry to Jerusalem. The Palm Sunday story teaches us some significant truths about Jesus’ role as the Messiah, his sovereign foreknowledge, and his fulfillment of prophecy. Those are serious and substantial points from this story. The

Pride vs. Humility

by: Brandon Powell

Is pride good or bad? Well, there’s certainly some types of pride that can be okay. To be proud of your children or some type of accomplishment is technically pride but not necessarily bad. However, there is a type of pride that is closely associated with selfishness. Selfish pride can be destructive. In Mark 10:35-45 we see an example of a prideful request and its consequences. Fortunately, we also see the solution to pride…humility.
